LizardArt is a co-operative of artists who mostly live and work on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Our members work in a wide spectrum of styles, and media, but all have in common the fact that they draw their inspiration from this wild and rugged landscape, with its huge range of light and colour.
LizardArt was founded some 12 years ago, with the innaugral meeting held in the Cadgwith Cove inn. We continued to meet there regularly for several years. Back in the early days of the group, our ambition was to provide a forum for lively discussion between artists who mostly worked in isolation. Discussion centered on developments within the Cornwall art world, and modern trends in art world wide. More mundanely we passed on information about the limited availability of exhibition space, and the affordability of going it alone. We were always on the lookout for venues, singly and as a group.
Like all groups of artists throughout time, we argued, fell out, made up, and voiced our varying opinions loudly. We also published a book called "The Eyes of the Lizard" which featured the work of all the members of the group at that time. This helped us to establish the recognition that we enjoy today. Some years ago we changed our name from the fine sounding " Peninsula Fine Art Group" to the abbreviated form we now use. " LizardArt"
The aims of the group remain the same, but much has changed during the last few years. Six years ago we founded our own Gallery on the Trelowarren Estate, outside Helston. The Estate is the family home of the Vivian Family, one of the oldest families in Cornwall. It is an integral part of the wonderful area on the Helford River known as Mawgan-in-Meneage. We were able to rent what was formerly the Estate Coach House, and it has become a large light airy space in which we can showcase the work of all our members.
The Stable Yard Gallery is run as a co-operative, showing primarily the work of the group members, with the occasional exception for a group show, or a charity event. One of these is the annual Affordable Art Fair, which takes place each year over the Easter period. We welcome submissions from artists throughout Cornwall, provided they are happy to discount their work to an affordable level. There are some stunning bargains to be had at this popular show!
Apart from jointly running the Gallery, the Group has a regular weekly life class, which is open to all artists wishing to attend. It is held in the Gallery during the summer months, and at a warmer venue in the winter!!
The group now meets on the first Wednesday of each month, in the Gallery, to conduct business, and discuss other items of interest to members. Many of us miss the old days round the fire in the pub, but we are a larger group now, and hope to keep on growing steadily, bringing in other artists from around the Lizard, and encouraging and supporting each other.
The Gallery at Trelowarren is open every day from Easter until the end of the October half Term, with a member of the group on duty. We have recently acquired a card machine, bringing us almost completely up to date. The Estate also has a well known and renowned Restaurant, "The New Yard Restaurant" and a Gallery of the Cornwall Craft Association, plus a wonderful plant nursery. There are some good walks on the Estate, which reaches down to the Helford River. So visiting our gallery can be rewarding and part of a great day out.
