Victoria Smith
I am inspired by my surrounding landscape. Certain aspects of it encourage me to paint. The dynamic spaces, shifts in scales and perspectives throw me so that ‘I’ lose my awareness and usual recognition of ‘self’. I am fascinated by the vastness of space and variations of mood along with the physical impact of intersecting headlands and horizon lines. I find myself using these physicality’s in a repetitive way in conjunction with other influences such as detailed rock faces and obstructing paths of light that halve or crop my view. Vertical and horizontal divisions have become a common occurrence in my work.
Points of distance rectified with small white and coloured rectangles or triangles flicker and catch your eye whilst skimming the surface. These have also become integral to my work. I enjoy the sharp focal points they offer, almost like a dip or clearing within an overlapping cycle of shape, ever changing colour and form. My paintings are a search for a balance, a stability of space and form fabricated by a process of layering and generating illusionary depth. I am absorbed by specific techniques and the progression of discovering and resolving new marks. The making of my work is a visual satisfaction.
